Dry Needling is a procedure used to alleviate pain by inserting a thin, solid needle into myofascial trigger points to relieve muscle pain and tightness, improve range of motion, and enhance overall function.
It is utilized alongside traditional physical therapy methods to address a wide range of issues, including chronic muscle pain, tendonitis, tension headaches, myofascial pain syndrome, sports injuries and more.
A myofascial trigger point is a hyperirritable spot within muscle that is tender to the touch and can oftentimes cause pain locally or refer to other areas of the body. They are characterized as palpable nodules that lack blood flow and oxygen supply compared to other muscle.
While there are similarities, Dry Needling is strictly based on Western medicine principles and research that aim to address musculoskeletal dysfunction, whereas acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine principles that aim to balance the body’s energy flow through meridians.
Most expierience a pinprick sensation that is brief and not very intense. Once the needle reaches a trigger point or tight muscle, you may feel a deep twitch response in the muscle. This twitch is a sign that the muscle is releasing tension. Such sensations are normal and beneficial, aiding in the therapeutic process.
Drink plenty of water after your session. Post-treatment, mild muscle soreness may occur, typically easing within 24-48 hours. Staying hydrated can help flush out any metabolic waste products released from the muscles during needling.
Gentle movement. Engage in gentle movements and stretches to keep the muscles from becoming stiff. Avoid vigorous exercise or heavy lifting for at least 24 hours to allow your body to recover.
Monitor soreness. Expect some muscle soreness or tenderness, similar to the feeling after an intense workout. This is normal and typically resolves within a day or two. If soreness persists or worsens, contact your healthcare provider.
Avoid alcohol. It's generally advisable to avoid alcohol immediately after the session, as it can dehydrate you and may interfere with the recovery process.
